The Zika virus has made its way to the East Coast with 2 confirmed cases in Florida. Research efforts have been accelerated to learn more about the virus declared to be a global health emergency. The primary carrier of the Zika virus is the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, but the Aedes Albopictus, better known as the asian tiger mosquito, is also believed to be a vector. Recently, health officials have announced that Zika is also likely to be a sexually transmitted virus, causing even more cause for concern.
Over 70% of people infected report no symptoms, so it's difficult to detect. According to the CDC, apparent symptoms typically include fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis. Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. The illness associated with the virus is considered to be mild with symptoms only lasting a few days to a week.
The most at-risk individuals are pregnant women. Expecting mothers infected with the virus risk the chance of also infecting the fetus. With the recent Zika outbreak comes an increase in microcephaly cases. Microcephaly is a neurological birth condition in which babies are born with significantly smaller heads and abnormal brain development. The link between the two is still uncertain, but investigation has lead to a strong belief that a Zika infection during pregnancy could lead to this rare birth defect.
