Where To Inspect Your House For Potential Leaks

There's a reason for the saying 'April showers bring May flowers!' April is a rainy month and if your house isn't prepared, it is also a very leaky month! Make sure you take care of these house parts for a dry, secure home.

1. Roof

Get your roof ready for the rain. Inspect your roof twice per year to avoid costly problems that can escalate into tremendous cost.

Look for cracks along the ridge of your roof and where your shingles fold over to form the cap.

Inspect the valleys of your roof (the area of your roof with a downward slope). Make sure that the sheet metal flashing does not have any holes or rusty spots.

Make sure that you do not have any missing, loose or curled shingles. Replace any that you find in bad condition as soon as possible so as to avoid moisture leaks inside your home that can weaken your wall and/or ceilings.

2. Gutters

Very few homeowners enjoy cleaning the gutters, but gutter maintenance prevents serious problems.

Clogged or damaged rain gutters divert water under roof tiles and into basements. When the rains come in heavy in April, having your gutters crack and clutter-free will allow for the water to be allocated away from your house, ultimately reducing damage.

3. Check Your Walls and Ceiling

Another great practice for repairing the outside of your house is to check the inside.

Inside your home, check out your ceilings to make sure that you are not experiencing signs of roof or other leakage. Be on the lookout for water rings, mold, or wall/ceiling discoloration.

It's important to make any necessary repairs and prevent any spring leaks from happening during the rainy season that's ahead of us.

4. Clear Branches

Stop putting off trimming your trees and branches! It's vital that you make sure all leaning, dangerous, and dead branches have been cleared from the exterior of your house.

This will reduce the risk for them to fall during a storm and damage your home. It also will help your pest control efforts, as hovering tree branches tend to welcome unwanted visitors into your home.

5. Inspect Basement, Crawlspaces, and Attics

Think about having your top and bottom levels of your home inspected. If water is seeping into your basement, you may have to invest in getting it resealed. And, if your attic isn't properly insulated early, you could rack up major charges.
