How To Set The Perfect Sprinkler Rotation
In preparation for fun spring activities, you want to make sure your yard is looking its best. This means making sure your sprinkler system is doing its part to give your lawn the best treatment it deserves.
Before we get started, here are some quick tidbits of information:
- The average yard needs approximately 15 to 22 gallons of water per minute. The larger the lawn, the more water it needs.
- The average sprinkler head shoots out water at a distance of 55 to 60 feet, shooting out approximately 15 gallons per minute. This is enough to keep a lawn well irrigated. If your soil is particularly low in pH, consider a lime application.
Sprinkler Adjustment Steps
Both sprinkler types, rotary-style and spray-type, need to be adjusted periodically as they tend to fall out of adjustment over time.
For a pop-up sprinkler you need to:
- Turn off the water and lift the sprinkler tube out of the ground with pliers.
- Look for a marker or marks on the edge of the nozzle. Rotate until the mark is aligned with the correct angle to cover your yard.
- Turn the entire sprinkler until the angle is corrected. Once corrected, place the sprinkler back into the ground.
For a rotary-impact sprinkler you need to:
- While the water is on, rotate the metal trip collars just under the spray head.
- Locate the trip lever, and push it down in the correct position so it makes contact with the other metal trip collars
- Set one collar to the left, and the other to the right. Doing this while the sprinkler is on will allow you a trial and error period to figure out the best result for maximum sprinkler coverage.
